What Is Discreet DNA Testing?
Discreet DNA testing allows DNA samples to be collected from approved personal items when a traditional cheek swab is not practical or available.
Common alternative sample types may include a used toothbrush, hair with the root attached, nail clippings, earwax swabs, or other approved items. Each sample is reviewed for viability before full laboratory analysis is performed.
Important: Discreet DNA testing is for personal knowledge and informational purposes only. It is not court-admissible unless a legal DNA test with proper chain-of-custody procedures is specifically ordered.
State laws regarding DNA sample collection may vary. Customers are responsible for ensuring sample collection complies with applicable laws. My Forever DNA® does not provide legal advice.
How Discreet DNA Testing Works
- Order your discreet DNA collection kit. Choose the relationship type needed, such as paternity, sibling, grandparent, aunt/uncle, or maternity.
- Collect your sample. Follow the included instructions for the specific sample type you are submitting.
- Package the sample correctly. Most alternative samples should be dry and placed in a clean paper envelope. Avoid plastic bags, as trapped moisture can damage DNA.
- Return your sample. Use the return materials included with your kit, where applicable.
- Lab viability review. The laboratory reviews whether enough usable DNA can be extracted before full analysis proceeds.
- Receive your results. Results are delivered as a secure PDF report via email—no portal, account creation, or barcode activation required.
Typical timeline: Discreet samples generally take longer than standard cheek swabs because forensic extraction and sample viability review are more involved. Processing time begins once samples are received by the laboratory and typically takes 5–7 business days.

Toothbrush DNA Testing
A used toothbrush is one of the most reliable discreet sample options because daily brushing can transfer cheek cells onto the bristles.
Works Best When:
- The toothbrush is used daily by one person.
- It has been used regularly for approximately 20–30 days.
- It is fully air-dried before packaging.
- It is placed in a clean paper envelope, not plastic.
Avoid Sending:
- A toothbrush shared by multiple people.
- A new or rarely used toothbrush.
- A toothbrush stored wet or sealed in plastic.
- Any sample with visible mold or moisture damage.
Hair DNA Testing
Hair may be used for discreet DNA testing only when the follicle or root is attached. Hair clippings without roots usually do not contain enough usable DNA for relationship testing.
Works Best When:
- 25–50 strands are provided.
- The root or follicle is visible.
- Hair is dry and placed in a paper envelope.
- The sample is handled carefully to avoid contamination.
Less Reliable When:
- Hair is cut with no root attached.
- Only one or two strands are provided.
- The sample has been heavily treated or contaminated.
- The hair is wet or stored in plastic.
Other Discreet Sample Options
Alternative sample success depends on the amount and quality of DNA present. The laboratory must be able to extract enough usable DNA before analysis can proceed.
| Sample Category | Examples | Reliability | Best Handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highly Reliable | Used toothbrush, earwax swab, hair with root | Often strong when properly collected | Air dry and place in a paper envelope |
| Moderately Reliable | Nail clippings, used tissue, dried blood spot | Depends on sample quality | Send visible material dry in paper |
| Variable | Worn hat, chewed gum, cigarette butt | Case-by-case viability | Send unwashed, dry, and minimally handled |
| Lower Reliability | Used razor, dental floss, condom | More difficult to extract | Handle minimally and ship dry |
Success rates vary by sample type, age, storage conditions, and handling. A sample viability review helps determine whether enough usable DNA is present before full analysis proceeds.
Samples That Usually Do Not Work Well
- Water bottles, drinking glasses, cups, or utensils.
- Items handled by multiple people.
- Items that have been washed, sanitized, or cleaned.
- Wet items or samples stored in plastic bags.
- Hair clippings without roots.
- Samples with mold, moisture damage, or heavy contamination.
What Happens If a Sample Does Not Have Enough DNA?
Some samples may not contain enough viable DNA after laboratory extraction. If that happens, our team will guide you through the next best option.
- You may be able to send a replacement sample of the same type. Additional fees may apply.
- You may be advised to switch to a stronger alternative sample type. Additional fees may apply.
We will always aim to provide clear, honest guidance about whether a replacement sample is the better option.
Discreet DNA Test Options
Discreet sample collection may be available for several relationship testing options, including:
- Paternity DNA testing with approved alternative samples.
- Sibling DNA testing with approved alternative samples.
- Grandparent DNA testing with approved alternative samples.
- Aunt/Uncle DNA testing with approved alternative samples.
- Maternity DNA testing with approved alternative samples.
You may also be able to combine sample types within a single test, such as one participant using a cheek swab and another using an approved alternative sample.
How Accurate Are Discreet DNA Tests?
When an alternative sample contains enough usable DNA, the laboratory can perform relationship analysis using the same scientific standards applied to standard DNA samples.
- Cheek swabs remain the preferred collection method because they collect fresh cells directly.
- Alternative samples depend more heavily on age, condition, storage, and handling.
- Sample viability must be confirmed before reliable testing can proceed.
Discreet testing can provide reliable results when the submitted sample contains sufficient viable DNA. If viability is limited, our team will help guide you toward a stronger sample option.
